Hosting The Giving Net’s Radio Show is one of the highlights of my week. Every Wednesday I hear stories from people who are serving their communities and the world in ways that show love and compassion in ways that strengthen humanity.
A couple of weeks ago, I was really moved by a story from Regina Taylor. Regina shared her story of impacting the Little Rock community by serving as the Executive Program Director at Greater Second Care Center, the nonprofit arm of her church. She shared that she saw senior citizens working at the Care Center and realized that she didn’t want to wait until she was a senior to serve there, so she applied to work there. (Hear her complete story here.)
I was deeply moved when she shared this realization and I asked myself, “Why wait to serve?” We can serve through our careers, like Regina does. We can serve through volunteerism. We can even serve by donating money and even our skills to our favorite cause or nonprofit. There are so many ways that we can serve, so why wait? The needs in our world are great, but the laborers are few, and the fierce urgency of now calls for us to take an active role, whatever that role may be, in serving our communities.
I admire Regina and all the other public servants who decided not to wait, but serve now!
